Anti-McDonalds - Global Day of Action Against McDonalds [see the pictures]
The global day of action against McDonalds takes place on 16th October. This annual event has been growing annually and globally, from Australia to Croatia to Russia and continues to do so.
Back in London, at the first McD outlet to be leafleted in the UK (the Strand, London), I cycled along knowing that we had only a small band turning up, but that making any sort of noise was reason enough to be there.
I expected the stores we visited that day to be boarded up and ringed with police, in a gross overstatement of paranoia, as they generally are at any demo. The whole affair was pretty laid back though, with lots of nice folk turning up for the occasion, giving out free veggie burgers and handing out leaflets (those pesky leaflets which got Mcd into so much laughable trouble as they instigated the longest libel case in British history!)
(Why not download some now!).
People were generally receptive, though I wonder at the bovine dumb faces chewing rubbish behind the glass. It always hurts to see children in there, particularly when they could be out playing drums with us!
Once we got into full swing, a crowd gathered, more burgers were handed out and so were the smiles.
The plan was to spend a short while at a number of stores, so we packed up and cycled off to Leicester Square where a bobby promptly told us some nonsense about bylaws and not being able to play until 5pm and then not even there but a few yards away!! Ignoring this sound advice we carried on as usual a few minutes later and I got a shock to turn around to a large audience.
The Anti-McD brigade had made some wicked banners, and were standing proud around the store, holding the message loud'n'clear for all to see.
The final leg had us outside the Whitehall store, stood on a narrow pavement, but all was well, and yet more veggie burgers went to good mouths. We were interrupted by a couple of gawdy clowns who were splattering people with foam pies but soon provided them with musical accompaniment to their escapades.
The day was a piece of the global jigsaw of protest against these disgusting giants, and I was proud to provide some tunes to keep it all going.
There's plenty more to do though, so go hand out some leaflets, do some actions, wherever you are!
